The way you store Sargassum changes the quantity and type of chemical compounds you find in Sargassum,”says Dr Thierry Tonon, Lecturer in Algal Biology at the University of York.
“It is surprising how little is known about the compounds that are available within Sargassum biomass. We are still working to see how to valorise this biomass to create benefits for the Caribbean and West Africa.
Over the next two years, we need to better understand whether these Sargassum blooms are going to continue – this is really important for valorisation, and to identify the compounds that you can find in the different species of Sargassum.”
